About the Study
This study aims to understand why some SCT carriers are at higher risk for Exercise Collapse Associated with Sickle Cell Trait (ECAST). ECAST is a rare condition that can occur during exercise in individuals with sickle cell trait (SCT). It is characterized by:
- Significantly greater effort during exercise than normal
- Unusual muscle weakness and pain, commonly in the legs and lower back
- Normal to modest temperature elevation while initially responsive

Am I Eligible?
Requirements
You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:- Are an African American active duty or civilian man or woman between the ages of 18 and 45.
- Have Sickle Cell Trait (SCT), with or without a personal or family history of ECAST events.
- Can speak and read English.
- A clinical diagnosis of an ECAST event is not required for participation, however SCT carrier status will be verified through genetic analysis.
Restrictions
You can't participate in this study if you:- Are younger than 18 or older than 45.
- Are not of African American descent.
- Are not SCT-positive.
- Cannot read or speak English.
- Are currently being treated for any mental disorders.
